Have you felt a push and pull between your inner longings and dreams and those that your parents had for you? How did you make choices within that tension? What fears arise when you consider choosing your own path?

In this chapter, I invite you into the sixth portion of our journey: giving yourself permission to choose in the midst of influences from parents, family, community, culture, and society at large. How can we give ourselves permission to choose situations, people, and lives that remain true to who we want to be, and to wrestle through the expectations, hopes, and dreams of others and still find our voice in the noise? The act of choosing is one of the most powerful ways that we can impact and change our lives. Choices are the pathways by which our lives twist, turn, and move forward (or backward) toward things that are either life-giving or depleting. This chapter challenges us to consider how we make choices and what the cost is when we bypass ourselves and choose to live for others.
